Old terraces: valleys, party walls and chimneys
Terraced rows often share valleys, party walls and chimney stacks, so one defect can affect two homes. Old lead in valleys cracks with age, and chimney flashings pull away from brickwork. Slates held on with old nails can slip as the fixings corrode, which is known as nail sickness.
Rear extensions and outriggers on Victorian houses commonly have flat or low-pitch roofs, covered with felt, GRP or rubber membranes, and those leak at joints and upstands. Access in terraced streets can be tight, and scaffold may need to cover several houses or use a pavement. We plan the work with the street layout in mind.
